On November 17 , 2018 that approximately 7:00 pm, The Service of Love Foundation invited guests to dance, laugh, and fellowship with them for their first Fundraising Dinner. This memorable event was held in the banquet room at St. Agatha’s Roman Catholic Church located on 702 48th St, in Brooklyn New York. On this calm November night, 120 guests traveled from various locations and NYC boroughs to support this great cause. If one were to gaze out at the individuals that filled the seats, one would see a beautiful melting pot of ethnicity, religions, and races conversing together. Many St. John’s University Students and faculty, volunteers, and other supporters were present in the crowd. Attendees were asked to provide a donation of $50; raffle tickets were also available for purchase with a grand prize of an iPad. In addition, wine, pictures, unique paintings, and delicious chocolates made up the bidding table for a silent auction. The night officially began with a presentation from co-director Sr. Agnes Nguyen; a St. John’s University student served as a translator for non-Vietnamese speakers. The presentation highlighted the mission and current accomplishments of the Service of Love foundation. From the distribution of scholarships to a total of 15 students this past fall, all the way to the foundation functioning as a symbol of hope for the Vietnamese people, this organization is the quintessence of genuine service. As the night progressed, different performers were eager to entertain guests. Songs were performed in English and in Vietnamese, a magician graced the stage and conducted a magic show, and dinner was provided featuring a variety of Vietnamese entrees, sides, and deserts. A total of $6,541 was raised from this event; the proceeds will help provide students with more scholarships and ensure that the elderly can live comfortable lives in Vietnam. This fundraising dinner showed all of the miraculous things that can happen when love is the driving force behind all that we do. We are called to serve, and we are called to love.
